Beschreibung

Decorated potteries of German Swiss - 17th-19th centuries, Ed. Cinq Continents, 9-½ inches x 10 inches ( 24 cm x 25.5 cm ), hardcover book with 536 full color pages - French/German edition

This hardcover book with 536 full color pages presents the enameled pottery produced of Switzerland from the 17th to the 19h century.
The terracotta with painted decoration with engobes under glaze constitutes the most widespread ceramic technique in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, especially in the Bernese countryside.
The workshops are concentrated in the region of Langnau, Heimberg, Blankenburg or Bäriswil.
Painted in bright colors, the popular decorations develop on a light beige or brown-black background; They are sometimes highlighted with nets engraved in the slip or with the roulette, or embellished with patterns in relief.
The iconography comes from popular tradition; In addition to floral motifs, there are characters in traditional costume, animals, coats of arms or genre scenes.
Quotations, religious or poetic, or details of the circumstances and date of manufacture or recipient may enhance the composition. The diversity, the freshness and the spontaneity of the decorations are remarkable.
The Ariana Museum in Geneva maintains an important corpus of nearly 200 Swiss pottery. This catalog, written by specialists in the field, gives an overview of a production that is often unknown.
