Beschreibung
This Hardcover book with 256 full color pages retraces the history of the Pinton manufactory.
Weaving modernities traces a century and a half of the history of French tapestry, from the founding of the Pinton manufactory in Felletin in 1867 to the present day. The book shows how this artisanal know-how has survived the major turning points of the 20th century, from the interior designers and decorators of the 1920s through the post-war period, up to the contemporary revival. Artists have followed one another there over the decades: Lurçat, Picasso, Le Corbusier, Alexander Calder, Salvador Dalí, Frank Stella or Joseph Albers, Claire Tabouret, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Beatriz Milhazes, Glenn Brown or Louise Bonnet nowadays.
A chapter written by Barbara Jeauffroy-Mairet also recounts a more unexpected page of this story, that of milliner Claude Saint Cyr, who, in the 1950s, incorporated Aubusson tapestry into her hats, coats, and shoes.
The book also looks back at the major projects that brought international renown to the manufacture: the immense Christ in Majesty woven for Coventry Cathedral, the monumental *Vardanank* for the Holy See of Etchmiadzin, or the curtains for the Sydney Opera House.
Richly illustrated with tapestries, previously unpublished archival material, and artists' preparatory cartoons, the volume also features two voices: that of the artist Jean-Luc Moulène and that of Jacques Bourdeix, a pattern designer and colorist at Pinton since 1970.
